Distinguished and Famous people from Canungra

🧭 Bernard O'Reilly

Bernard O'Reilly is associated with the mountain country above Canungra, where the O'Reilly family developed its guesthouse. He became nationally known after finding survivors of the Stinson aircraft crash in 1937. His home, Goblin Wood, also served as a Catholic Mass station before a church was relocated to the guesthouse grounds in 1955. His home lay in the Lamington National Park hinterland reached from Canungra. His story joins the area's early tourism with a demanding search through rainforest terrain.

⚓ Grantly Lake

Grantly Lake spent part of his childhood in the Canungra district, where his family farmed and operated a mixed store. He attended Canungra State School before further education in Brisbane and training for the Catholic priesthood. Army chaplaincy during the Second World War led to a long naval career, including service aboard aircraft carriers during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Known as “Mons”, he also supported naval rugby and donated the Mons Cup. His easy manner and concern for people of different denominations were remembered alongside his sporting interests. Canungra belongs to the childhood behind that life at sea.

🎖️ Bill Henderson

Bill Henderson served as acting commandant of Canungra’s Jungle Training Centre from July 1960, one appointment in a career combining field command with training. Earlier service included New Guinea and Korea; later he commanded Australian troops in South Vietnam and headed the army’s Training Command. His nickname, “Boots”, reportedly followed an unusual parade at Holsworthy when he ordered the men to sit down so he could inspect their footwear. The Canungra connection is a documented professional posting. It places the town within the preparation and instruction behind a much wider military career.
