Canungra

Situated on the Beaudesert-Nerang Road, Canungra is a rural township within the West Moreton Region of Queensland, approximately 72.8 kilometres south-south-east of Brisbane, the state capital. The locality, which has an estimated population of 725 residents, is nestled on the foothills of the McPherson Range and is bisected by the Canungra Creek. Today, tourism is one of its most important industries.

The history of Canungra dates back to the close of the 19th century when loggers moved into the valley, established a camp, and steadily started a local timber industry, which has helped develop the township during its first few decades. The locality's name is believed to have been derived from the Aboriginal word caningera, which means "small owls" (possibly a reference to the owls seen within the area).

Governed locally by the Scenic Rim Region LGA, Canungra is represented in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland by the Electoral District of Beaudesert, as well as by the Federal Division of Wright in the Australian House of Representatives.

Its geographical location has made Canungra an important tourism hub, which serves as a starting point for exploring the picturesque locales around the area. The township is considered as the gateway to some of the region's most notable natural attractions, such as Binna Burra, Gold Coast Hinterland, Lamington National Park, Mount Tamborine, and the Green Mountains.
